If you are a long-time, faithful follower of the stories of our clan, you may remember when Master got His new knee. We were, at that time, apprehensive but optimistic that the successful completion of that surgery, and the subsequent rehabilitation would make for a huge improvement in His quality of life. It hasn't quite worked out that way. The new knee is some better than the crummy knee that it replaced, but it is nowhere near as good as a healthy real knee would be, and there remains the other knee which was even worse to begin with and still needs to be replaced someday.
He has never, in spite of aggressive work to rehabilitate, ever been able to resume the kind of walking program that we were engaged in prior to His surgery. That has contributed to a continual, and steady battle with weight gain. Even though we rigorously control for sugars, carbohydrates, fats, and sodium, He has consistently lost that battle.
In the last year, He's been given additional medical diagnoses including severe spinal stenosis, meuralgia parasthenia (a neuropathy that creates pain and burning in His thigh), and elevated liver enzymes that we believe are related to the statin drugs that He is given to control hyperlipidemia. On top of that, His once very well controlled diabetes has become more volatile and harder to manage. Recent blood work indicates increased levels of uric acid in His system, which puts Him at risk for developing gout.
We are simply feeling beleaguered and bewildered in the face of this array of medical hurdles. Master, in particular, is frightened, and angry, and very much hurt at this turn of events. To have worked so hard to have it all turn out badly anyway is a huge disappointment (at the very least).
He is at this point, considering bariatric surgery in the hope that it might prove the solution to the weight control dilemma -- and that solving that issue might eliminate, or at least radically improve a whole host of other medical issues. He will consult with a surgeon this week, and make some decision. If it gets quiet here, you will know that it is because we are simply "up to our necks in alligators."

ReplyDeleteSending well wishes your way. As for weight loss...have you considered weight watchers online? It has done wonders for me, and the structure is right up the Domination/submission alley.
ReplyDeleteI am sending out best wishes and positive vibes to all three of you, hoping these difficulties can be overcome, at least to a manageable degree.

I, too, am very sorry to hear about all of the cascade of medical problems. I've seen some amazing results with the bariatric surgery. A word of caution, should he choose to go that route. The surgery prevents alcohol from being metabolized in the way it was prior to the surgery. The detox unit where I work has had multiple admissions of individuals (male and female) who have been drinking normally all of their lives who find themselves in serious trouble (needing detox) with only a very few drinks. Please be sure that all of you get all your questions answered about this before the surgery!
ReplyDeleteMy thoughts are with you,

Will keep you very close in thoughts; had worried a bit at your longish absence for you. It sounds like it's what I like to call "one foot in front of the other time" meaning try not to look too far ahead just try to keep plodding along working forward on your problems until things get better. Sending you best wishes and hopes while you do.
ReplyDeleteHeron Clan,
ReplyDeleteAs you know from my blog, I have certianly been up to my neck in alligators with health issues lately! I really appreciate all the kind comments that you leave for me and they contribute to the circle of positive energy that I try to put around myself.
For me, one of the worst parts of illness is making decisions on a treatment plan. I agonize over every possible choice and cause great stress to myself (and probably to those around me!) Once I have a treatment plan in place, I find I can relax a little and start to move forward. It's that period of limbo that drive me nuts!! And it sounds like you guys are in that place of limbo right now. What are the right choices that will improve Tom's health?
Once you do your homework and get a plan in place, I bet you will find your way to peace again.
Sending warm thoughts your way.

No wonder you've been quiet sweety.....sounds like you all have a load of stuff going on right now. Soft hugs and positive thoughts to all of you.

W/we have several friends in our local BDSM community who have successfully gone through bariatric surgery, and they all seem to be doing great. There are risks, but you all know that, the point is, there are risks associated with not having the procedure. My sincere best wishes that whatever path you choose will ultimately lead to health and wholeness.

Can you find a place to swim? Perhaps that can replace your walking program. It is very easy on the joints and its very aerobic. Also, if he has trouble getting down the steps into the pool, there are some pools that offer services to people with disabilities and he may be able to use their hoya lift to get into/out of the pool.
ReplyDeleteAlso if he can tolerate a sauna he may find that achieving a sweating state without stressing his body otherwise may get his body to behave better because of all the nourishing effects that sweating causes in the body chemistry.
There's also a few types of massage therapy which increase lymphatic drainage and make it easier for the body to process junky stuff that sits around a body which is struggling with health and with being too stationary which might help. He could check with his doctor about ones that might be contraindicated and for an opinion about whether any of these suggestions would be safe with his conditions.
I sure hope you find answers to these difficulties without the need for surgery.
Keep us posted?
T,
ReplyDeleteMy Dad had the stomach by-pass done over 30 years ago in Canada that was done from a Doc from John Hopkins Hospital and it was a great success, even had it reversed 30 years later. At the begining there were a few problems but not enough to worry about. Although the stock in Glade was increased 1,000% !!
If you need any questions answered about it, do contact Me and I will do My best to answer them as I have gone though all the things Dad lived with also attended the conferences He talked at about this surgery since He was # 13 in Canada that had it done.
